IPTA Karwan
Indian Peoples’ Theatre Association (IPTA) is an issue based theatre group. In 1942 when IPTA began, the thurst was anti British, but after independence, the focus changed. Social, economic and political problems became IPTA’s main issues. These problems are perennial. Hence, there is always a need for social and political conscious theatre. Some time it can work in nature of protest theatre. At certain other times it can be used to pressurize the authorities on certain issues. SO the need for a theatre movement like IPTA definitely exists. There are many who question the purpose behind IPTA. The purpose cannot be pinpointed to any one thing. The idea is to have theatre, which is socially and politically relevant. IPTA is not just a theatre meant for entertainment. In fact, we don’t even say there should necessarily be an ideology, but there is a need to be aware the problems that exist – during election time, during an earthquake, during famine and drought and a need to highlight them.
IPTA says People are supreme in democracy. Government has a role to play. But it's the people who shape the country; the society. We have to follow Gandhi's ideas and philosophies in order to solve many of our problems as well as shape the way of life that leads to peace and harmony.
As far as the independence is concerned, much has been done and a lot more is remains to be done. Gandhiji said that we had achieved the political independence but we have to achieve social and economic independence and it is more difficult task. Working at the grass root level is very difficult but we don't have other way left. We have to do that for changing the way of life of the people. Participation of people in that process is necessary.
Keeping these idea and value Indian Peoples’ Theatre Association (IPTA), Patna has decide to organize a theatre festival to ensure its creative commitment for just society. This will be our annual feature and we would try to give this festival as a national event. The main purpose and objective of celebration is to apprise with and remind the people, particularly the younger generation, the ideals and value of our social, cultural and political values and to protect its heritage for which our freedom fighters strived through out his life.
